The Jaguar XK140 was introduced in 1954 and sold from 1955 to 1957 when it was replaced by the XK150. Technically it was very similar to its predecessor the XK120, but with improvements to suspension, steering and brakes. Styling differences included larger bumpers, different grille and a chrome strip to the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. Engine and bulkhead were moved 3” further forward to give driver and passenger more legroom, making it a much more comfortable car to drive!
The XK140 continued to use the same 3442cc six cylinder engine from the XK120 but with a 10hp increase in power to 193hp in its standard form coupled with a Moss 4 speed gearbox with overdrive as an option, which this car has.
The FHC shared the interior trim and rear seat with the DHC with wind up windows and Walnut veneer dash and door cappings, but the roof line was lengthened by moving the windscreen forward, resulting in shorter wings and longer doors to give better access and more interior room.
The XK140 production was very much aimed at the US market and the vast majority of cars went there, with only around a quarter of XK140 Fixed Head Coupe cars being produced in RHD form.
This car was originally registered in November 1955 to Mr Wentworth of Southall Middlesex who kept the car until 1961. It then passed to Charles Garage of Middleton Cheney where it remained until being sold to Mr Wootton (Manager of Charles Garage) also of Middleton Cheney. After 9 years in Mr Wotton’s ownership, in 1975, it passed to Mr Kenneth Charles, Middleton Cheney, who kept the car until 1986 and confirmed at that time, with 63,000 miles on the clock, that the cylinder head had never been removed! It was then purchased by Mr Daniels from Lutterworth who kept it for 18years, towing his 2 MGA Twin Cam cars to various local race meetings in his first few years of ownership but using the car very little after that as it had only covered 67,000 miles when it next changed hands. In May 2003 Mr Lane-Sponge purchased the car and commenced some restoration work. Chassis, sills and ancillary body repairs were carried out along with a bare metal re-paint and bright work re-chroming. Internally the wood veneer was restored and carpets, headlining and trim were all renewed. The latest owner purchased the car in 2006 with just 69,000 miles on the clock and set about removing engine and gearbox to get the car into superb mechanical condition. The gearbox and overdrive unit were both overhauled and the engine rebuilt by Trafford Competition Engines (Tewkesbury). At the same time the radiator was re-furbished, petrol tank repaired and relined, new fuel pump and filter and 12volt battery fitted. Since then the car has benefitted from an electric cooling fan, new tyres, re-trim of the interior along with new bucket seats, front disc brake conversion, re-built rear suspension and re-chroming of front and rear bumpers and hub caps.
This is a superb example of a Jaguar XK140 FHC, a car that continues to increase in popularity and value especially in original RHD form.
