The DB5 was essentially the next generation of the very successful DB4 but with so many improvements it was launched as a new model. The same 6 cylinder Tadek Marek engine was increased to 4.0 litres with a resultant power improvement of 40hp to 280hp in standard form or 310 hp as Vantage. A new 5 speed gearbox and much improved braking enhanced the cars driveability and along with many other refinements made this a superb sports car at the time.
Introduced in the summer of 1963, only 886 saloon cars and a mere 123 convertibles were built until October 1965, when production was given over to the DB6.
Originally registered in March 1964, coincidentally to a Mr Bond!, from Cardiff, it left the factory in its original Agean Blue with Fawn Connolly, chrome wheels 3 eared hub caps and heated rear window. Aston Martin Factory records show it returning on several occasions for servicing and other work up to January 1966. The first printed V5 for the car issued in 1977 showed the keeper as a Mr Howells from Pershore Worcester who kept the DB5 until 1989 when it came into the hands of a Mr Buck from Leeds. A full restoration was commenced in 1989-90 by Mr Buck and eventually completed by the subsequent owner Mr Ludlum between 1995 and 96 under the careful eye of marque specialists Aston Engineering. The full restoration included body off re-spray and full engine re-build to Vantage spec with 4.2 Cosworth pistons and performance camshafts. Mr Ludlum parted company with it in 1998 when it came under the ownership of Mr Clark who had the DB5 maintained by Aston Martin Works Newport Pagnell. The car became known to Desmond in 1999 when it became the property of local owner Mr Haynes. Desmond bought the DB5 from Mr Haynes in 2001 and sold it to the current keeper shortly afterwards. Since then the car has been meticulously maintained by both Aston Engineering and Desmond J Smail Ltd and remains in superb driving order and excellent condition throughout.
