The DB5 was essentially the next generation of the very successful DB4 but with so many improvements it was launched as a new model. The same 6-cylinder Tadek Marek engine was increased to 4.0 litres with a resultant power improvement of 40hp to 280hp in standard form or 310 hp as Vantage. A new 5 speed gearbox and much improved braking enhanced the cars driveability and along with many other refinements made this a superb sports car at the time. Introduced in the summer of 1963, only 886 saloon cars and a mere 123 convertibles were built until October 1965, when production was given over to the DB6.
This DB5 left the factory in June 1964 in its original Dubonnet Rosso with Grey trim and according to the manufacturers build sheet was sold by Aston Martin Agents Charles Sidney Ltd in Bradford, to a Mr Edwin Bright Pell from Sheffield. The DB5 returned to the factory on several occasions for servicing and other maintenance with its last recorded entry in May 1967 when it had covered just 21,000 miles. At some point after this the car was exported to the USA where it is noted as belonging to a Mr David Hill in 1982. It returned to this side of the Atlantic, to Dublin in fact, in 1989 before eventually coming back to the UK and into Desmond’s hands in 1992. By this time the DB5, which was still in original condition, was in desperate need of restoration and Desmond sold it as a project to a local customer. This project however never got off the ground and the car remained garaged and untouched for the next 25 years! It has since been discovered and a full 100-point nut and bolt restoration was commissioned in 2017 and has just been completed. This exceptional quality restoration has been finished to the highest standards possible to original specification with some discreet enhancements which include 4.2 litre Cosworth spec engine re-build, electric power steering, sound and heat proofing, electric cooling fans and modern connectivity. It is a certified matching numbers car with its original engine and gearbox and comes with manufacturers build sheets and fully documented restoration history.
This beautiful DB5 is simply one of the finest we have seen, is in perfect condition and ready for use.
