The DB5 was essentially the next generation of the very successful DB4 but with so many improvements it was launched as a new model. The same 6 cylinder Tadek Marek engine was increased to 4.0 litres with a resultant power improvement of 40hp to 280hp in standard form or 310 hp as Vantage. A new 5 speed gearbox and much improved braking enhanced the cars driveability and along with many other refinements made this a superb sports car at the time.
Introduced in the summer of 1963, only 886 saloon cars and a mere 123 convertibles were built until October 1965, when production was given over to the DB6.
This DB5 left the factory in July 1965 in its original Silver Birch with Dark Blue Connolly to be a Demonstrator for Leeds Dealer, Arnold G Wilson. Its first keeper, Mr Keech from Brig Hall, Kikby-Overblow, Yorkshire, bought the car shortly afterwards. According to some of the plentiful correspondence in the history file, Mr Keech’s son explains that his father went to Arnold G’s to try the car and was so impressed by it that he bought it on the spot! The car remained in the Keech family for many years, passing from father to son in 1972 by which time it had covered just 20,000 miles. Although it was seldom used and exceptionally well cared for by the Keech family, they did eventually part with it in 1991 when the car was sold to a Mr Frame from Glasgow, at which point it had covered a mere 26,000 miles! Despite its low mileage and exceptional original condition, the DB5 was after all nearly 30 years old and was in need of a little care, so Mr Frame immediately brought it to Olney, the home of two renowned specialists, Desmond J Smail and Peter Austen Smith for their opinion. In his report at the time, Desmond comments that, ‘the car is in remarkable condition, drives superbly and is the most original DB5 I have seen!’ The car was however in need of some sympathetic remedial work, particularly the paintwork which had suffered nearly 30 years of polishing! A bare metal re-spray was undertaken in Sierra Blue along with various other works in keeping with the cars originality, all in time to be entered into the AMOC Silverstone Concours in June 1992. Mr Frame’s profession kept him out of the country much of the time and as such the DB5 continued to have very little use during his ownership although it was always stored and looked after. By the time he asked Desmond to sell the car for him in 2004 it had still only covered 30,000 miles. The current keeper bought the car from Desmond later that year and has embarked on a no expense spared programme of bringing the car up to an exceptional standard but at the same time preserving its originality wherever possible. This DB5 has a genuine 33,000 miles from new, has been meticulously maintained, is in superb condition and has a comprehensive history...
