The Aston Martin V8 first appeared in 1970 as the DBSV8 in the handsome William Towns styled DBS body which had previously utilised the 6-cylinder DB6 engine. Designed by Aston Martin engineer Tadek Marek to replace his 6-cylinder unit, the new engine was an all alloy 4 cam V8 of 5340cc developing 350 bhp in its standard form, giving the car a staggering performance at the time!
With a change of company ownership in 1972 and a few styling adjustments, most notably the use of single headlights, the car became simply the AMV8 or just V8. The development of the car went through 5 series right up to the end of production in 1989 which is testament to the Towns styling and the longevity of the Marek engine. The most notable developments came in October 1978 with the introduction of the series 4 saloon or ‘Oscar India’ as it was known, and included the most visual difference of an integrated boot spoiler along with a new dash with wood trim, leather headlining, improved air conditioning and revised shock absorbers. Although produced until 1986 and regarded as the pinnacle of the V8 development, the ‘Oscar India’ saloon is very rare with only 468 cars leaving the production line, making these cars extremely collectable!
This two-owner car was ordered from Aston Martin Sales Sloane Street by Mr Edwards of Chinghall Ltd, Bletchley in July 1979 and subsequently registered in September that year. Being only a stone’s throw from the factory in Newport Pagnell where his car was made, Mr Edwards returned it there for all its servicing and maintenance. Mr Edwards was obviously a meticulous man having the car serviced at every single scheduled interval and maintained whenever necessary. He also kept a record of his original order form, vehicle purchase invoice, warranty card along with every service and maintenance invoice and all correspondence with the factory to confirm a full Works Service history during his ownership!
He eventually parted with the car in 1993 when it had covered 70,000 extremely well documented miles. He even wrote to the factory thanking them for their help over the years and expressing what a pleasure it had been, he also asked them to offer any information about the car to the new owner. After purchasing the ‘Oscar India’ from Mr Edwards, the current registered keeper has used the car sparingly but still maintaining it with Works Service and other specialists alike, including more recently D J Smail Ltd, covering just 12,000 miles in their ownership.
A rare opportunity to purchase a very sought after V8 ‘Oscar India’ in an exceptional original condition with a very comprehensive Works Service history.
