Rolls Royce introduced the Silver Spirit in 1980 to follow on from the very successful Silver Shadow II, using the same 6.8 litre V8 engine and 3 speed automatic gearbox but with many improvements over the outgoing model. Rolls Royce also offered a long wheelbase version of the car and named it the Silver Spur. The Silver Spur II replaced the original car in 1989 with improvements to the interior, suspension and a new 4 speed automatic gearbox amongst others. The final version, the Silver Spur III, came in 1993, again with many improvements including an increase in power output from the V8 engine, fitment of airbags, enhanced suspension and revised interior. This car remained in production until 1996 but Rolls Royce decided in 1994 to produce a very limited run of Silver Spur III vehicles fitted with the turbocharged version of the V8 engine which had been utilised in the Bentley Turbo R. Initially planned as a run of 50 vehicles they did eventually build just 134 of these special edition cars and named them the ‘Rolls Royce Flying Spur’, the most powerful car that Rolls Royce had produced at the time!
This Flying Spur was first registered by Jack Barclay Ltd, London, in February 1995 to Mr Peter Wright of Waystrode Manor, Kent. It remained in the Wright family and under the care of Jack Barclay until 2011 when at just 19,000 miles it was purchased by its current owner.
Belonging to an executive of a major music company, the Flying Spur came to reside in California, where its titled owner had the idea of converting it to an estate car. Having seen several Rolls Royce estate car conversions and not liking their ‘boxy’ appearance, he commissioned the renowned ‘West Coast Customs’ to create the stylish raked roof-line look that he wanted. He also wanted to ensure the car looked as ‘factory’ as possible so set out to design something the Crewe workforce would be proud of. Using only the best quality materials, aluminium panels to match the original bodywork and retaining the cars original British Racing Green colour over which the car was painted light metallic green.
After several years of enjoyable motoring in California, this unique car was returned to the UK in 2014 where its right hand drive configuration was more practical. The car comes with a comprehensive history file, has been fully maintained throughout its life with only three keepers and has covered just 25,000 miles.
