The DB6 was the final evolution of the Aston Martin that had started with the introduction of the DB4 back in 1958. Launched in 1965, it departed from that evolutionary path to a far greater degree than its predecessor the DB5. The ‘Superleggera’ principle of body construction was largely done away with in favour of more traditional methods with a resultant weight saving. The wheelbase was increased by 4” which gave the cabin more room and for the first time the car became a true four seater! There were also marked styling differences over the DB5, in particular the rear three-quarter windows which recall the DB4 GT Zagato and the ‘Kamm’ inspired tail, reflecting the Project 214 race cars, which greatly improved the DB6’s straight line stability. The DB6 also had the best version yet of the Marek 4.0 litre 6 cylinder unit with improvements in Vantage form to develop a power output of 325 bhp. With the increase in wheel base and improvements to rear suspension and engine development the DB6 was considered the best Aston yet to drive and as such continued to be produced until 1970 by which time the DBS production was well under way.
This DB6 Vantage was originally registered in March 1966 to Skelly’s of Motherwell, a well known Scots car dealer, in Fiesta Red with Natural Connolly and the added options of, limited slip diff, chrome wire wheels, heated rear screen, power aerial and 7 pints of antifreeze! Skellys sold the car in June the same year to Mr Graham from Surrey who subsequently sold it in 1972 to Mr Hobart from Hertfordshire. Mr Hobart entered the car into the 1974 St. John Horsfall Meeting finishing 4th in The Cheylesmore Trophy Race! Its next change of keeper came in 1978 when it came into the hands of Mr Stirling, an hotelier from Haverfordwest who kept the car meticulously well maintained until parting company with it in 1989. It was looked after by a Welsh dealer for the next 4 years undergoing a full bare metal re-spray in its original colour during this time. It then cane into the hands of Desmond J Smail in 1993 who not only sold it to its next owner but have also looked after it and kept it to its high standard of maintenance. The car changed hands again in 2012 and underwent a full engine re-build with Aston Service Dorset in November 2013 and has had little use since. Keeper history is well documented with original factory build sheet, green card log book and a very comprehensive history file.
It is currently undergoing a full restoration with Desmond J Smail Ltd to include a bare metal re-spay in Cumberland Grey and re-trim in Red Hide.
